“If you think you are too small to have an impact…try going to bed with a mosquito in the room.” I have no idea who deserves credit for saying this, but I’m guessing it just might be another PCV living in Africa.
Mosquitos are indeed a huge nuisance here. Fortunately, I don’t live in the malaria zone, so I don’t view every mosquito as a killer … just as a huge pest. The buzzing sound they make flying around my head at night can keep me awake for hours.
Poor John, however, is a true mosquito magnet. As long as I stay close to him, they hardly bother me. John is feeling miserable and getting desperate, as evidenced by our growing number of anti-mosquito sprays, ointments, etc., with garlic & parsley pills being the latest (as I said, he’s desperate). So far, not a success. Tips anyone?
Note: PC has supplied us with a mosquito net for the bed. Unfortunately, our ceiling is covered with ceiling tiles so we haven’t figured out a way to hang up the net. Still working on it!

As I fellow mosquito magnet, my sympathies go to John although the buzzing in the night that keeps you awake, Susan, makes me equally sympathetic to your. In preparation for our trip to Costa Rica, Jim and I consulted with a travel doctor whose wife happens to also be plagued by mosquitoes. He wrote me a prescription for sulfur (precipitated) 750 mg capsules with the directions to take one each day. The prescription had to be filled at a compounding pharmacy, but I wonder if they aren’t also available over the internet. Don’t know if there are any concerns about taking them over a long period of time, though. I’m also ordering some insect-repelling pants from Sierra Trading Company. Haven’t used them yet, but the on-line reviews are good.
