The new school year starts in just a few days. The stores are full of school uniforms and supplies. One of the store school items had me stumped for a few moments (pics #1 & 2) until I recalled that learners are intent on wrapping their books and notebooks in covers. So many kids do it that perhaps it is required.
Learners here in SA generally don’t use the 3-ring binder notebooks which are so common in US schools. Often they have a soft covered tablet much like a blue-book that we might use for exams. They will have one per subject and it will be used for classwork and homework assignments.
For the primary grades, the teacher maintain the notebooks and will pass them out during class and collect them at the end of class. With the higher grades, the learners only turn in their notebooks when something needs to be checked or graded (often daily). Seemingly, an inordinate amount of time is used passing out and collecting notebooks. Occasionally, one or more learners are enlisted to help with book distribution (pic below) and this indeed speeds up the process, otherwise, approximately one third of the class time might be spent dealing with getting the books distributed and consequently determining where the missing ones are.
