In my village, family yards are generally well maintained. They are ALL enclosed with a tall fence (security concerns) and within the fence, the grounds are typically tidy. Many of the yards have some hardy flowers and flowering shrubs. Not totally awesome landscaping, but not bad either.
The areas along the streets and side roads (i.e., land outside of the fenced-in home areas) is a whole different matter. Generally, there is a lot of litter and it is rather unsightly and poorly maintained, if at all (some areas better than others). There is such a contrast between the private grounds and the public space.
Occasionally, some wildflowers will take over an area along a road or path. It is such a pleasant thing to come across such flowers in an otherwise barren stretch of ground.
