When I travel from my site to Pretoria (typically for PC business), I will take a 3 and a half hour taxi (minivan) ride. The ride always includes a 10 minute “rest” stop in small town called Marble Hall. Local vendors are always waiting at our stop with the current fresh fruits and /or vegetables. Today, the veggie-of-the-day is corn.

The corn vendors are typically women and they carry large pans of cooked corn-on-the-cob on their heads. They approach each taxi as soon as it stops in hopes of tempting the passengers. The corn is often boiled but just as often, it is roasted. Both looks and smells good.

So far, I haven’t indulged only because I can’t imagine eating corn on the cob in a crowded taxi and then sitting with sticky fingers for the next 1-2 hours. A good PCV wouldn’t have such concerns since the locals don’t have a problem with it. Sticky fingers or not, next time I’m getting some corn!
