First, I can promise that I didn’t have to go far from my front gate to get the pictures above. Tossed glass bottles and broken glass are everywhere. My inclination is to pick up bottles, cans, and other trash, but the task would be overwhelming and also, there’s nowhere to put the trash, that is, there are virtually no public trash receptacles in the entire village.

I have often wondered if there were trash bins around, would the littering be so bad? I’m afraid the answer would be “yes,” or at least “most likely.” I constantly see people (young and old) dropping bottles and trash on the ground as they walk down paths or streets, stand around outside of stores, and drive/ride in cars/taxis. No one seems to look or think twice.

Getting back to broken glass specifically, this item disturbs me most because so many children go barefoot so much of the time. They sit and play in these public areas. Because the kids are so often barefoot, the bottoms of their feet are pretty tough, but some of the larger pieces of glass could still inflict some damage. They seem to have either a natural instinct or good learning habits on how not to step on the broken glass. Whatever it is, it seems to be working for them.
