Back in the states, I think we owned only one or two buckets. Here in SA, one can never have too many buckets! Truly, I don’t know how we would function without the ones we have and I occasionally wish we had more.
Every bucket we have now has a specific purpose and we rarely use them for multi-purposes. We could, but generally we don’t, especially considering that there is drinking water involved. Here’s a run down of the buckets pictured above and how they are used:
Picture #1
Green bucket (left): mopping (tile floors in both rooms and they get dirty really fast)
Red bucket: bathing
Green bucket (right, with lid): pee bucket (going outside to the pit latrine in the middle of the night is just too inconvenient … or scary)
Green and pink buckets (back right and front middle): fetching water for bathing
Picture #2
Pink and white buckets (on bottom): Main drinking water storage
Clear with black lid (on top) buckets: fetching water for drinking (the pink and white buckets at 22-25 liters each are just too darn heavy to carry)
The above doesn’t include the multiple small plastic basins we have and use (for example, separate ones for washing dishes, hands, teeth). Whew! Sounds a lot more complicated when it is all listed!
