Ladies in the rural village wear aprons a lot. Some just around the house, but more importantly at big functions such as a wedding. The wearing-of-the-apron signifies that you are part of the prep crew helping with the cooking, etc. As most weddings are a neighborhood affair as much as a family affair, lots of women help with the food and thus “wear” the apron.
I have a fancy, new apron given to me by my host mother. Her niece got married several months ago and as I am considered part of the family, I was also invited to be one of the helpers. Unfortunately, we were unable to arrive at the wedding site until late morning, so a large part of the cooking had already been completed. I would have felt bad except that I had also been asked to bring salad to serve 100, so the morning spent chopping tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and avocados was not wasted.
When I first noticed ladies wearing these aprons, I thought the aprons were a bit unattractive, but now I find them to be somewhat endearing. Back in the US, however, I think I will stick to my plain white Williams-Sonoma version.

You actually look great in the apron! Of course, you also EARNED it.
