To braai is an Afrikaan term meaning to grill or barbecue, and the activity is hugely popular everywhere in South Africa. One of the best meals I’ve had thus far in South Africa was a braai prepared by the hosts at our favorite bed and breakfast in Polokwane. (Note: Just like the term “barbecue,” the term “braai” can be used as both a verb and a noun.)
Sausages and steak are the favored meats for a braai. Most people in the villages like their meat well done and by that I mean very well done. Fortunately, when a group of PCVs recently got together for a braai, the meat was prepared more to my taste — medium or medium rare and just right!
