One of my Peace Corps colleagues here in South Africa pointed out that today marks 500 days we have been in the country. That number certainly caught me by surprise!
I’ve been doing my own counting, and my preference is to count down the number of days remaining … which happens to be 291 as of today. Many people have told me that the second year of my PC service will fly by, and thus far, I would have to say they are correct. Seems like just last week I was flipping the calendar page to November. Now it is already the 20th of the month.
I would like to point out that just because I’m counting down the days doesn’t mean I’m not having a good time. I have lots of plans for the remaining 9+ months. Lots of things yet to accomplish at school, and many places in the country yet to visit. Nonetheless, it is a wondrous feeling knowing that there is a finite number of bucket baths remaining. Indeed, I am counting.
Hi! I was just wondering if when you signed up for the PC you said you preferred to go to SA or somewhere else?
I did list Subsaharan Africa as my first choice, but I was guessing I would end up in some place like Kenya or Tanzania. South Africa never even crossed my mind. It has been both a curse and a mixed blessing to be in a country which is so developed and yet so undeveloped.
