In about six weeks I’ll be working for a few days at a girls’ camp for young girls from rural areas who have probably never been away from home. Not sure but guessing that making friendship bracelets will be an item on the list of activities. Having never made a friendship bracelet before (although I can claim a bit of macramé experience), I decided it was time for me to learn. What better way than to have two visiting PCV friends to show me?
Both PCVs Abby and Samantha (aka Sam) are experienced bracelet makers, and we all had a lot of fun making some bracelets and trying different patterns. Just as fun was catching up on each others’ Peace Corps lives and experiences. Turns out that the bracelet-making is quite easy and lends itself well to concurrent chatting.
The session ended with Abby and Sam braiding colored threads into each other’s hair. Hair braiding is very common here with the local women, but incorporating colored threads is not commonly done. Who knows? Maybe Abby and Sam will start a new trend in their villages.
